Benedict XVI.'s trip to Turkey next November will be a crucial test of Muslim-Christian relations, says a Vatican official.
Cardinal Walter Kasper, head of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity, made this observation as he referred to the slaying of an Italian priest February 5 in Turkey. The killing has been linked to protests over cartoons in the Western media depicting the prophet Mohammed.
Father Andrea Santoro's death is a shock also for Turkey to open itself a little bit to Christians, Cardinal Kasper told the Associated Press in Porto Alegre, Brazil. The cardinal is attending a gathering there hosted by the World Council of Churches.
Cardinal Kasper suggested that the Pope could use his visit to encourage Turkey to ease restrictions on Christian churches and schools.
