| ![]() Postulator Paas: "This will be the feast together with all saints and blessed in heaven"vor 3 Tagen in Interview, keine Lesermeinung "I hope that many will discover Archbishop Eduard Profittlich SJ as a person and a spiritual person and will have a lot to learn from him" says Dr. Marge Paas, the postulator of the German-born martyr bishop. kath.net interview by Petra Lorleberg Tallinn (kath.net/pl) "I feel excited. This is a spiritual feast in my heart. Since there is a lot of work and preparation, I would like to be able to prepare better from the heart, especially in the spiritual sense." This says Marge-Marie Paas, the press spokesperson for the Diocese of Tallinn. The philosopher holds a doctorate and she has been the postulator for the beatification process of the Estonian martyr bishop Eduard Profittlich SJ. Profittlich was born 1890 in Birresdorf/Bistum Trier und he died in Kirov in prison facing his death penance 1942 under the Soviet regime. kath.net: Dr. Paas, your diocese is preparing for the beatification of Archbishop Eduard Profittlich on September 6th in Tallinn. Are preparations already in the hot phase? Dr. Marge Paas, Postulator: Yes, it is a very intense time. The team has 25 members and everyone is working and is busy. The bishop is attending meetings and giving interviews. But I, myself have caught a bit of a cold. The weather in Estonia is such that there is a lot of rain and wind and cold. I really pray that the weather will be nice on September 6, because in our country a lot depends on the weather. Also, the guests must have warm clothes ready for the outdoor Mass. Maybe this shows that we in Tallinn are working a lot and thinking about many details. kath.net: There is no grave for Bishop Profittlich. Has a search been conducted for his remains? Dr. Paas: Profittlich died in Kirov in 1942. He was buried in a mass-grave like thousands of Estonians. The entire area around the prison is full of mass-graves and I heard that no trees grow there. It was a tradition to throw dead bodies into a hole in Soviet Russia. So we don't have anything left of his body, but we do have a lot of his personal belongings. kath.net: What will happen to these personal belongings of your martyred bishop? Dr. Paas: We prepare the exhibition. I t will be nice one and the Diocese will also present the personal belongings. Also, I would like to make pilgrim route in Estonia and in Germany and Poland where he lived. This is work on progress. I will devote myself to create such a pilgrim route. I would like that Christians to keep together today. It is important. And I think our Cathedral, museum, will be the first point of this pilgrim route. kath.net: A chapel has also been prepared Dr. Paas: Chapels are built to honor the memory and holiness of someone recognized by the Church as having lived a life of exceptional virtue, as did Profittlich. After beatification, a new chapel in the crypt of our Sts. Peter and Paul Cathedral will be opened. With this chapel, dedicated to Profittlich, we would like to show respect and gratitude for Archbishop Profittlich. Dr. Paas: For example, in Opole (where Profittlich lived after his studies in Krakow): kath.net: You have an excellent ecumenical friendship in Estonia. How are Estonian Protestant Christians reacting to this beatification? Dr. Paas: They all will be present and join in prayer. In the end of beatification Mass, we will have ecumenical prayer to commemorate all souls who died in Soviet Russia last century. And the friendship is visible how they support us. Even there is one Lutherian charity organization, called Kirikufond, who donate us. It is very good sign and help for us. kath.net: The beatification will be a moment in which the history of Estonians and the universal Catholic Church will encounter each other particularly intensely. How do you personally feel about this? Dr. Paas: I feel excited. This is a spiritual feast in my heart. Since there is a lot of work and preparation, I would like to be able to prepare better from the heart, especially in the spiritual sense. But I will give everything to make this thing beautiful and dignified, because my respect for a person like Profittlich is very high. I hope that many will discover him as a person and a spiritual person and will have a lot to learn from him. And this will be the feast together with all saints and blessed in heaven.
